Tunnels Beach
Tunnels Beach is probably one of the more popular beaches on the North Shore, and for good reason. It's stunningly beautiful, with a steep cliff of lush green mountains rising dramatically over the sea. It also has a nice reef, which normally makes for a large area of shallow, clear water that is ideal for snorkeling. What better beach to introduce Derek and Christine to the wide world of snorkeling? None, in my opinion. Here they enjoyed viewing the many various colorful tropical fish that populate these waters. Derek quickly became snorkeling's #2 fan (#1 of course being the easily excitable Mr. N).
An interesting factoid: Bethany Hamilton, the teenage professional surfer who famously lost her arm to a tiger shark attack 4 years ago, was born and raised on Kauai. The attack location? Tunnels Beach. I did not share this with C&D until AFTER they had left the water.

I agree...Tunnels beach is by far one of the best places I visited on the island. The snorkeling here is unbelievable. The best I've ever experienced. Tiger sharks do seem to be the major "shark problem" in Kauai, but I've yet to see one diving or snorkling. Remember sharks feed at night & most of the talk I've heard of tiger sharks is seeing them at dawn in the early hours of the morning.
Oh, yeah...a local told me there's a lava tube that goes straight into the giant green mountain you see when you look at the shore. It's supposedly the only way in the mountain is through this lava tune. Ironically sometimes if you go through in the day (which you either have to hold your breath for at least a min or two to get all the way into the pool inthe mountain-or you can take a scuba tank, but you have to push it in front of you or drag it behind because the diameter of your body will not fit with a tank strapped to your back) there may be a tiger shark "sleeping" there. The guys said you just roll 'um over and go right by & they never bother you. Supposedly there's a torch in the cave after you exit the pool you come up from. You can then explore the inards of the giant green mountain...adventure, excitement, a jedi craves not these things...
